Founded in 1953 by the Georgetown University Alumni Association, the Athletic Hall of Fame originally recognized over 100 former athletes at the University following the dropping of major college football at the University two years earlier. In 1975, a tradition of biennial (now annual) ceremonies was begun.

The Hall was not a hall, per se: a plaque at McDonough Gymnasium stood as the only point of recognition for nearly 40 years until a formal site was dedicated at the Leavey Center in 1994. Today, visitors to the building can view bas-relief plaques honoring selections from 28 different Georgetown sports. Additional details on the awardees are also shown in video boards at the John R. Thompson Athletic Center.

At present, 36 alumni and seven contributors have been selected from the sport of men's basketball, noted below. Nominees are selected no earlier than 20 years following their class' date of graduation.
