ALL-AMERICA, 1955

Amidst a decade filled with .500 records and generally disappointing finishes, the mid-1950's welcomed Georgetown's top scorer of the decade, 6-4 forward Warren Buehler.

An all-state forward from Bayonne, NJ, Buehler took over the starting forward spot of the graduated Bill Bolger as a sophomore and proceeded to rewrite the Georgetown record book. In 29 games that season, Buehler scored in double figures in 26 of them, including 15 straight to end the season. A pair of 29 point games against Pitt and Duquesne and a 30 point game against Detroit were preliminary to his career-high 36 points against Virginia on Feb. 13, 1954. Buehler's 36 was not even the high score of the night, as All-American Buzzy Wilkinson dropped 45 on the Hoyas in a 85-78 Virginia win. Buehler ended the season with 511 points, a GU record, and his 18.2 points per game average, was second in school history to that point.

An accurate jump shooter with a quick step to the basket, Buehler turned in a second strong year of offense in 1954-55. After Georgetown lost a top scorer after mid-terms for a second straight season, Buehler picked up the scoring load. he scored in double figures in 15 of his last 16 games and 21 of 25 overall, with a season high 31 against Seton Hall. For his efforts, both the Georgetown media guide and the Ye Domesday Booke note an honorable mention All-America citation for Buehler, but the source of the designation is unknown. At season's end, Buehler was chosen as the inaugural recipient of the Francis Daly Memorial Award for the team's most valuable player.

Buehler took a leave of absence from Georgetown in 1955-56, returning for his senior season one year later. A slow start returning to varsity play cost him a shot at a third scoring title, but he finished with three 20+ scoring games late in the season. For 1956-57, he finished third in scoring to Joe Missett and Matt White, with 228 points in 20 games.

Warren Buehler graduated in 1957 he pursued a career in secondary education in Essex County, NJ, but was justly remembered for his athletic and academic achievements, having been inducted into three halls of fame, that of Bayonne HS, his alma mater, Weehawken HS (where he taught), and the Hudson County Hall of Fame. While his 2011 obituary noted membership in Georgetown's Athletic Hall of Fame, he is not on the current roll.

Buehler graduated as the school's all time leading scorer (1,134) and second all time rebounder (461). While those statistics have been passed in the intervening years, his efforts remain noteworthy for the teams of that era.
