Recruited by former high school coach Tommy Nolan, Tom Matan was one of a number of Gonzaga standouts that starred in the Georgetown lineups of the late 1950's and early 1960's.

Matan, all all-Met forward in 1957, was the third of three Gonzaga starters for the Hoyas in 1958-59, and he had perhaps his most productive season therein. Matan could play forward or even center if needed, and his inside scoring was in eveidence all season--30 vs Loyola-Chicago, 27 vs. Loyola (Baltimore), and 26 against Seton Hall--all at a height of only 6-3. Matan's 14.3 average was second that season to Brian Sheehan.

With the arrival of taller forwards like Bob Sharpenter and Paul Tagliabue in 1960, Matan was often moved to a swing position, with a mixed bag of results. He posted six double figure games in 1960, including 21 points vs. Fairfield, but finished fourth in scoring, behind Sheehan, Tagliabue, and fellow Gonzaga alum Tom Coleman.

The arrival of a new coach and ongoing injuries limited Matan in his senior year and left him vulnerable on defense. Despite shooting over 46% from the field, and scoring 21 in a game against American, Matan saw limited time as a reserve towards the end of the season, appearing in just 16 games. Over his three seasons, Tom Matan was a steady and reliable shooter for the Hoyas, and his play remains memorable in the bigger games of that era.
