Sam Jefferson (1986-1990)
The last in a line of Georgetown centers from the former St. Anthony's HS that dated to Merlin Wilson in 1972, Sam Jefferson was a valuable reserve amidst some of Georgetown's winningest teams.
Jefferson played center at All Saints (the former St. Anthony's) through the 1984-85 season, when the school ended coeducation for an all-girls program and later closed in 1989. In 1985, Jefferson transferred to Flint Hill Prep, averaging 15 points and 14 rebounds a game that earned state and national honors, including a third team Parade All-America selection at center. (The second team center was Alonzo Mourning.)
The 6-9 center saw action in 114 games over four years, starting in 17 games amidst a rotation of big men that variously included Johnathan Edwards, Anthony Allen, Ben Gillery, Alonzo Mourning, and Dikembe Mutombo. Named the team co-captain as a senior, Jefferson started 12 games and averaged 45 percent from the field. Highlights included a 10 rebound game versus Connecticut, a 14 point game versus Syracuse, and a 16 point game against Pittsburgh, where he shot 8 for 10 from the field in only 19 minutes of action. In his four years on the Hilltop, Jefferson was a part of two Big East championships and was a combined 102-24 (.809), 53-5 at home.
An outstanding student, Jefferson was named the recipient of the Raymond Medley Memorial Award, presented to the model student athlete of the 1989-90 season. Jefferson went on to attend law school at Georgetown, graduating in 1994 and serving as a civil and corporate litigator in the Washington area for nearly a decade. He returned to Georgetown and served a fellowship at the Law Center while earning a postgraduate degree in 2006.
Jefferson, who has since changed his name to Kemit Mawakana, currently serves with the city of San Jose, CA.
