Sam Foley (1911-1914)
A law student in the early 1910's, Sam Foley earned eight varsity letters in three sports over three seasons, three of which were on the basketball team, where he was a three year starter and team captain in 1913-14.
"His achievements on the gridiron and basketball court have covered him with glory; he led one of the greatest quintets in the history of Georgetown," wrote his yearbook citation. "A truer fellow, with a larger heart, it would be hard to find."
Foley served a distinguished career in New York legal circles. Following military service in World War I, Foley served as an assistant district attorney in New York, where he participated in the extradition of Bruno Hauptmann, whose 1932 kidnapping of the infant son of Charles Lindbergh made headlines worldwide. Foley served for 16 years as Bronx County District Attorney, and was a judge at the time of his death in 1951. According to the New York Times, 10,000 people lined the streets for his 1951 funeral.
