A tough, resilient forward, Owen Gillen proved to be one of Georgetown's most consistent rebounders during the 1960's.

Gillen arrived at Georgetown a second team all-state selection from Passaic Valley HS and a Dell Sports All-America selection, but was somewhat unknown among the Hoyas' promising 1966 recruiting class. A 14 point, 10 rebound effort in the 1963-64 season opener versus Maryland brought Gillen some local attention, and by mid-season he became one of the team's most valuable front court players.

A 23 point effort over Canisius was a season high that year, with strong efforts in wins over Fordham and Rutgers along with losses to Boston College and Holy Cross. For the season, Gillen led the team in rebounding and finished second in scoring for a Georgetown team that won its most games (15) since 1953.

Gillen was not able to start the 1964-65 season until January, the result of a nine game suspension by the NCAA over participation in an off-season AAU tournament. Gillen returned to form upon his return, scoring 18 against Navy and 16 against Delaware. For his abbreviated 14 game schedule, Gillen averaged 13 points and seven rebounds a game, second to Jim Barry in both categories.

In the fall of 1965, Owen Gillen did not return to the team for his senior year. Years later, Gillen's statistics continue to distinguish his efforts for the team. His rebound average still ranks 11th all time and his career scoring average was seventh among players from the 1960's. Among athletes that played only two seasons, his 8.6 rebound average trails only Jerome Williams (1994-96).
