Micah Peavy (2024-2025)
Micah Peavy, a 6-8 forward from Duncanville, TX, transferred to Georgetown in the spring of 2024 following stops at Texas Tech (2020-21) and TCU (2021-24), where he earned a degree in general studies in December 2023. Peavy averaged 8.1 points and 4.1 rebounds in 98 games for the Horned Frogs, with 20 double figure games in 2023-24, mostly from inside the three point arc. He selected Georgetown over offers from Creighton, Houston, Kansas, and Kansas State.
Since the arrival of graduate transfers in the mid-2010s and the transfer portal hereafter, one year players had been underwhelming for Georgetown...that is, until Peavy arrived. His veteran on-court presence and attention to defensive made him an optimal fit for an Ed Cooley lineup that had lost three starters from an underperforming 9-23 team in 2023-24. He opened his season at Georgetown shooting 8 for 10 from two point range in an 85-77 win over Lehigh, and never looked back.
In a 16 game run during the Big East season, Peavy led the Hoyas in scoring 12 times, and seven of eight games in late January and early February. A 24 point effort led Georgetown to its first road win versus Villanova in 14 years, led by 27 at Providence, 27 at Xavier, a season's best 30 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in a home win over Providence.
At the conclusion of the regular season, Peavy led the Hoyas in scoring, minutes played, three point shooting, and steals, and was second in rebounds and assists. The Big East took notice as well, naming Peavy a first team all-conference selection, only the second Georgetown player so recognized since 2015.
"As Georgetown's top perimeter defender and one of the best defenders in the Big East, Peavy accepted every assignment given to him and often found success either shutting down the opposing team's best offensive player or at least making them work for their points," wrote basketball analyst Jamaill Hines. "He shows an understanding of how to leverage his blend of quick-twitch athleticism, strength, length, active hands, and anticipation skills (especially in passing lanes) to consistently be a formidable defender both on and off the ball. Peavy is no doubt amongst the draft's most underrated defenders, but that should change as evaluators and NBA decision-makers...dig into his film more after the season's conclusion."
The league did take notice, where the Washington Wizards drafted him in the second round and traded the rights to the New Orleans Pelicans, who promptly signed him to a four year, $8.7 million contract, with two years guaranteed.
A one season career doesn't place Micah Peavy among the legendary Georgetown players of the past, but his impact will not be soon forgotten.
