Marc Egerson (2005-2007)

The addition of Marc Egerson was a powerful addition to Georgetown's 2005-06 recruiting class. A two-time Delaware state player of the year, Egerson averaged 25 points and eight rebounds as a senior at Wilmington's Glasgow HS, and showed a strong jump in two years at Georgetown, from a 1.6 points per game average as a freshman to 7.5 points as a sophomore, with the kind of rebounding skills that were coming into its own as Georgetown neared the corner of its 2007 Final Four run.

In the midst of a promising sophomore season, Egerson announced a sudden transfer to the University of Delaware. A brief statement from John Thompson III merely said that "We respect his decision [and] understand that the University is not a perfect fit for every individual and appreciate the contributions he made while he was here." It was not until March that, during the Final Four weekend, the New York Times discussed the other side of Egerson's story.

Georgetown had taken care to list Egerson has a senior from Glasgow HS, when in fact, he did not graduate from Glasgow, but finished at Lutheran Christian Academy, a correspondence school in Philadelphia with a staff of one, the basketball coach. According to the Times, Egerson's transcript from Glasgow featured 12 F's (including an F in physical education) and a 1.33 GPA overall, insufficient for enrollment at any NCAA institution.

Since Egerson was no longer a student at Georgetown, the impact was muted but nonetheless an embarrassment to coach Thompson and his lead recruiter, Kevin Broadus, who left Georgetown later that spring.

The Washington Post followed the Times' lead with a rare editorial taking aim at the Hoyas, noting that "Georgetown University, which happily made the Final Four, posted poorly with a graduation rate for its basketball players of 47 percent. Contrast that with its overall graduation rate of 93.2 percent and one wonders about the university's priorities. Georgetown also showed some of the worst disparities between white and black men." Athletic director Bernard Muir addressed the subject, responding that "The March 31 editorial...relied on data for players who entered Georgetown from seven to 10 years ago. Those data include student-athletes who enrolled at Georgetown but later transferred or withdrew. Other facts demonstrate our commitment to educating student-athletes...Since 1996, of the players who played four seasons of men's basketball at Georgetown, 16 of 17 received degrees. This speaks to Georgetown's deep, long-term commitment to providing the support and resources for our athletes to succeed academically."

Egerson's two years at Delaware were otherwise positive. An all-CAA selection, Egerson averaged 15.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game in his senior season. He pursued a professional career in Canada after graduating from Delaware in 2010.
