Larry Long (1973-1977)

The prototypical small forward of the mid 1970;'s, "Larry Long is a man after my own heart," wrote John Thompson in 1974. "He's a real competitor. Larry doesn't like to lose."

Long played every game of his freshman year, averaging 7.1 points per game with a career high 25 points versus Boston College. Injured in a game versus St. Joseph's, Long began a difficult run of nearly three seasons hampered with various injuries.

In his sophomore season, Long averaged 9.4 points and 6.2 rebounds as Georgetown made its first NCAA appearance in 32 years. Throughout the season, Long battled through a rash of ankle, thigh, and knee injuries, and was forced to undergo knee surgery in the summer of 1976 as a result.

Long's junior year was tempered by a 11 game absence to begin the season due to academics, then battled tendinitis and the flu. Off the bench, Long contributed 7.4 points per game on 42 percent shooting as the Hoyas won its second straight ECAC crown.

Selected captain his senior season, Long continued a strong "sixth man" role, finishing third on the team in rebounds and shooting 44 percent from the field. His last two games showed a glimpse of what his career might have been like without the injuries, as Long collected 28 rebounds in post-season games with Old Dominion and Virginia Tech. He finished his career ranked 10th all time in rebounds with 469.

Long was named to the U.S. All Star team at the conclusion of the 1977 season.
