Jake Young (1932-1935)
Basketball was not the end of the road for Jacob ("Jake") Young, but the beginning.
Young was a native of Erie, PA, where he played at Cathedral Prep. While his contributions on the basketball were meager at Georgetown (11 points over three seasons), Young was an active member of the college student body, serving as vice president of the glee club, editor of the yearbook, and an associate editor at the HOYA.
From his graduation in 1935, Young earned a master's degree in English at Boston University and taught for five years at Georgetown. In 1941, he left academia for radio, serving for 15 years as an announcer and program manager at WERC-AM in Erie, hosting shows as diverse as a book review program and being the color analyst on minor league baseball games. In 1956, he returned to teaching at nearby Gannon University where, according to a 1987 biography, he specialized in Shakespearean drama and the history of poetry.
Following a Ph.D. from Western Reserve University, Young became a full professor at Gannon, teaching until his death in 1974 at the age of 60. He was posthumously honored with the university's Distinguished Faculty Member Award.
