A two sport letterman at Georgetown, 6-5 John (Jake) Gibbons was at home on the court or the diamond for the Hoya teams of the mid-1960's.

Gibbons played a reserve role through much of the 1963-64 season, averaging 6.4 points per game. His 26 against George Washington was a season high, and late season play would prove valuable for Gibbons in his junior year, when forward Owen Gillen was suspended for the first nine games of the season.

One Dec. 19, 1964, Gibbons scored a career high 42 against Canisius in a losing effort, two short of the school record. For the season, Gibbons was third on the team in scoring with an 11.1 average, shooting 53% from the field and 70% from the line. Games against Richmond (21 points) and Navy (15 points) were among the season's best.

For his senior season, Gibbons faced more bench time amidst the taller front lines of Bob Ward, Steve Sullivan, and Frank Hollendoner. Despite the limited time, Gibbons averaged just under nine points and five rebounds a game, shooting 48% from the field. His 22 points against Fairfield, including the game winner with seconds remaining, was a brief highlight of an otherwise bitter February which saw the Hoyas narrowly miss the post-season for a third consecutive year.

Gibbons and the class of 1966 ended its career with an overall record of 44-28, the first senior class to post three consecutive winning seasons.
