Joe Franz (1962-1964)

Inconsistency and injuries were the story of Joe Franz, a high scoring guard who showed flashes of his scoring abilities over two seasons for the Hoyas.

A center at Baltimore's Loyola HS, Franz scored 62 points in a game. Moved to guard upon his arrival at Georgetown in 1961, he posted a season high 38 in a freshman league game versus Bullis Prep. As a sophomore, Franz finished fourth on the team in scoring with a 9.5 points per game average, shooting 41 percent from the floor and posting 12 double figure games in 26 games.

Injuries slowed Franz as a junior, with a 5.8 points average. "He has shown flashes of his ability, scoring well against Delaware and Manhattan just last year," wrote The HOYA in 1964. "In between, he has been disappointing. Lacking strength, he has frequently become discouraged with his rebounding, and that discouragement often resulted in mediocre shooting and floor play."

Hopes were high that Franz would regain his touch as a senior, but he suffered a career-ending knee injury in a pre-season scrimmage versus Maryland and did not play during the 1964-65 season.
