John Frank (1935-1938)
A two sport star in football and basketball, John Frank was a reliable sixth man for the Hoyas over three seasons from 1935 through 1938.
Sometimes referred to in print as "Johnny Franks", Frank played halfback for three seasons and a backup guard/forward for three seasons in basketball. Frank played in 45 games over three seasons, averaging 1.7 points per game.
Following law school at Georgetown, Frank was an attorney by trade but was the subject of numerous articles about his ties in and out of the the intelligence community. A field agent with the FBI from 1941 to 1948 and a counsel in the Office of Price Stabilization, Frank was linked to a number of CIA activities in the 1950's and 1960's, including an indictment for acting as a foreign agent for Dominican strongman Gen. Rafael Trujillo.
"Two counts of the indictment charge that Frank, also known as "John Kane", had collected information for and "solicited and accepted" compensation for the Dominican Republic since 1954, without registering as a foreign agent," wrote the Washington Post. Cited in the Associated Press as "a 6-foot-2 inch, 217-pound former football star at Georgetown University," Frank was sentenced to two years in prison in 1957. It remains unclear if Frank was acting independently of the Agency or under someone's orders; Trujillo's death in 1961 has been alleged to have had CIA connections.
In 1962, Frank was convicted on a surveillance effort of another attorney at Washington's Mayflower Hotel. In 1974, the United States Court of Appeals rejected Frank's appeal of a 1968 wire fraud conviction that he was among a group of men which allegedly defrauded $1.1 million from Marie Dominguez DeLeon, the daughter of the former Gen. Trujillo.
A resident of Washington since college, John Frank died in 1991.
