Irvin Church (1991-1995)
When the shooting touch of Irvin (Chico) Church heated up, he was as productive a scorer as Georgetown had on its backcourt in the years before Allen Iverson. When it wasn't, things cooled down in a hurry.
Church was an All-Met guard from Parkdale MD who averaged 22 points as a senior and entered the Georgetown lineup as a backup to sophomore guard Charles Harrison. When Harrison transferred in January 1992, Church was promoted to the starting lineup, averaging a solid 9.6 points a game and 10.5 points per game in Big East play, earning him recognition on the Big East All-Rookie team.
Church's numbers were either very good or very bad. he topped 20 points in three Big East games, including a career high 21 in Georgetown's upset of #21 Connecticut at Capital Centre. He could also suffer through some bitter scoring droughts: 0 for 10 in the game at Connecticut, 1 for 11 at St. John's, 3 for 17 versus Providence.
Despite a free throw mark of 90 percent in conference play, Church's 31 percent shooting in conference play was concerning. As a sophomore, Church started three games early in the season, but none further. John Jacques and Eric Micoud split time at shooting guard while Church's time (and scoring) sank further. He averaged just 2.2 points a game, most of it in non-conference play. Church was 3 for 7 for eight points in a Jan. 30, 1994 game at Boston College, but finished the season 1 for 11 and was a combined 5 for 28 in Big East play, a world removed from his freshman season.
Church spend the next two years as a backup--first to George Butler, then to Allen Iverson. Church's senior year was a redemption of sorts--while he only averaged 13 minutes a game, Church averaged 4.3 points in Big East play, with a 42 percent shooting mark.
