GEORGETOWN ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME

A three year starter from 1935 through 1938, Harry Bassin was a key contributor to a home court record that sustained Georgetown basketball through some lean years.

One of nine recruits in the class of 1938, Bassin soon distinguished himself as its leader. Bassin scored in every game during his sophomore season, including a team high 11 points in an upset of nationally ranked NYU, and led all scorers with a nine point per game average.

Bassin saw a more limited role in 1937 with the arrival of fellow Eastern HS alumnus Ed Kurtyka, who wrestled away the scoring title. Bassin continued to be a force in the big games, including 12 point effort to end a multi year Syracuse home win streak, 45-36.   Bassin returned as lead forward in 1938, falling short of the scoring title but contributing a career high 16 points in his last college game, 39-38. Bassin was named to the first team All-Eastern Intercollegiate Conference team in recognition of his efforts.

Bassin signed a pro baseball contract with the New York Yankees in 1938, playing in its minor league system through 1943. He died of a kidney ailment in 1965 at the age of 50.
