George Muresan (2016-2020)
Rare is the four year walk-on at Georgetown. Rarer still is a walk-on who helped win a Big East game in the closing moments, a moment that will be part of George Muresan's legacy for years to come.
Known on his Twitter feed as "Little Georgey", the 6-9 Muresan was the son of former Washington Bullets center Georghe Muresan, who stood 7-7. The younger Muresan was raised in Franklin Lakes, NJ and settled in the Washington area, where he played high school basketball at St. Andrew's HS in Potomac, MD, averaging 5.8 points a game. His father was not disappointed in his son's play, however.
"I'm very proud of him. When I miss game, I feel bad," the elder Muresan told the Washington Post. "I tell him all the time, most important is not basketball, just have fun. I don't want him to be me. He's way more smarter than I was."
The tallest walk-on at Georgetown in over six decades, Muresan played sparingly over his first three seasons, seeing action in just 11 of 95 games and scoring three points. Extended time on the bench was expected into his senior season, but the transfers of Galen Alexander and Myron Gardner elevated Muresan to an unexpected role: the team's second string power forward. More a finesse player than a power forward, Ewing needed Muresan in games, and he arrived in Big East play playing 14 minutes against Providence when Jamorko Pickett fell victim to foul trouble. In Big East games, Muresan averaged just under five minutes per game off the bench.
One game in Muresan's senior season stands out among all others. On Feb. 8, 2020, Muresan was called from the bench with 1:49 to play following Pickett's fifth foul in a close game with DePaul. Muresan picked up a big rebound on his first defensive series and was fouled with two seconds remaining as DePaul closed the lead to just two points. With his father cheering on from the stands, Muresan sank both free throws to preserve Georgetown's 76-72 win.
Following graduation in 2020, Muresan recveived a graduate degree from Georgetown and is currently a software engineer.
