After a 1992-93 season which saw four different underclassmen start at shooting guard, Georgetown went into the junior college ranks for 6-2 George Butler, described in the 1993-94 media guide as "an outside shooter with great athletic ability". A 22 year old who arrived to Georgetown following stops at Maine Central Institute, Lamar University, and Tyler Junior College, Butler's experience would provide a bridge into the Allen Iverson years for the GU backcourt.

Butler began his college career in impressive fashion, opening with a 21 point effort versus Maryland, and leading the team in scoring for three of its first five games. The 6-2 guard scored in double figures in 21 of his 31 games in 1993-94, including a 26 point effort in a win over Boston College and 24 points against Seton Hall in a overtime win in the semifinals of the Big East tournament. The next day, Butler scored 18 midway in the Big East final versus Providence, but fouled out with 11:09 left, leaving the young Hoya backcourt ill-prepared in an eventual ten point loss to the Friars.

Butler regained the scoring touch the following week in the NCAA's against Illinois. Scoring 18 of his career high 27 points in the second half, the 6-2 junior led Georgetown in an upset of Illinois, before falling to Arkansas in the second round two days later. For the season, Butler finished second in scoring and led the team in both three pointers and free throw shooting.

For his senior season, Butler was paired with freshman sensation Allen Iverson, but managed to continue his scoring efforts early in the season. His most memorable game that season came in an overtime win versus Memphis at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. Butler scored 15 points, including a late three pointer to send the game into overtime and two free throws to seal the win.

On January 7, 1995, Butler did not suit up in the Hoyas' 71-64 win over Miami. Following the game, head coach John Thompson announced that Butler had been dismissed over academic problems but did not elaborate. Butler ended his abbreviated senior season averaging 11.2 points per game, trailing only Allen Iverson and Othella Harrington in scoring average. Following Georgetown, Butler went on to a pro career in Australia.

Despite a career that spanned only 40 games, George Butler's career average was 5th best among players of his decade.
