Eric Micoud (1992-1994)
Born in Benin and raised in France, Eric Micoud attended high school in Washington, DC, where he joined the Hoyas in the fall of 1992.
Micoud started eight games as a freshman, scoring 14 against Pitt and 15 each in back to back games with Providence and Villanova. His shooting declined towards the end of the season, with only 10 attempts in the final 10 games of the season, but Micoud's 6.0 points per game average (7.4 ppg in Big East play) was second among all Georgetown guards and fifth overall.
As a sophomore, Micoud scored in double figures for three of the first four games of the 1993-94 season but struggled thereafter. As junior college transfer George Butler was more of a factor, Micoud's star dimmed. Following a 11 point effort against UConn on Jan. 4, 1994, Micoud scored only 31 points in the final 22 games of the season.
Micoud was part of a notable date in Georgetown athletic history: August 4, 1994. Though Allen Iverson had committed to Georgetown University four months earlier, there was no announcement, in that the school had no available scholarship for him. On the date Iverson arrived in Washington, Georgetown announced that Micoud would take a leave of absence for military service in France, which still required conscription for all male citizens.
"We understand Eric's obligation...and fully expect to welcome him back in a year," said coach John Thompson.
The coincidental timing of the announcement was lampooned by Washington Post columnist Tony Kornheiser, who suggested that Thompson had sent Micoud to the French Foreign Legion.
Micoud never returned to Georgetown. The next fall, he joined the pro team at Besancon BCD, which won the 1995 Nationale Pro B title. Micoud played in the French professional basketball ranks for the next 16 years, retiring in 2009 and later serving as a coach from 2012-2015.
