Don Martin (1939-1942)
A three year letterman for the Hoyas from 1939 through 1942, Don (Dino) Martin worked his way up the roster to a starting role for the 1941-42 season, averaging 6.6 points and finishing third in team scoring.
Following service in World War II, Martin was signed by the Providence Steamrollers, one of 11 original franchises to what became known as the national basketball Association (NBA). On Nov. 2, 1946, Martin became the first former Georgetown player to play in the league, scoring 18 points as the Steamrollers defeated the Boston Celtics 59-53 at the Rhode Island Auditorium. Martin led the Steamrollers in scoring in 14 games with a career high of 40 versus the Cleveland Rebels, and finished third on the team in scoring.
Martin left the Steamrollers after two seasons and took a job as a coach at LaSalle Academy. he returned to the college game in 1953 to become head coach at Boston College. In nine seasons, Martin was 109-102, and coached the Eagles to its first ever NCAA appearance in 1958, led by junior guard Jack Magee.
