Primo Spears (2022-2023)

Amir (Primo) Spears was a well traveled guard before arriving to Georgetown in 2022. A native of Hartford, CT who played two seasons at Northwest Catholic and two at Windsor High School, he spent a year at Mount Zion Prep, a basketball prep school outside Baltimore, before signing with Duquesne in 2021-22. As a freshman, he averaged 12.7 points per game for the Dukes, who lost its final 17 games of the season and finished 6-24. Spears was one of seven Duquesne players opting for the transfer portal, signing with Georgetown in April 2022.

Spears "gives us another physical defensive-minded guard who can make the right passes," said head coach Patrick Ewing.

A lightning-quick player with a knack for driving to the basket, Spears was the fastest Georgetown guard in a decade. It soon became apparent that Spears was more than "another physical defensive minded guard"; instead, he was tabbed as the Hoyas' lead guard, sending Dante Harris to leave the team before the season opener and apply for a transfer at year's end.

Spears was front and center in Georgetown's opener opener, with 28 points versus Coppin State. "Primo Spears drove right in transition, elevated and kissed a contested layup off the glass, "The Georgetown bench erupted after the sophomore guard's clutch basket extended the Hoyas' lead. Finally, a moment of relief after their stressful season opener required overtime," wrote the Washington Post. "Not long after, the Hoyas had their first victory in 328 days."

The leading scorer in 2022-23 at 16 points a game, Spears led the Hoyas in scoring in 17 of 32 games. His 475 field goal attempts (14.8 attempts a game) was the highest of any Georgetown player since Victor Page. A season high 31 points (on 15 for 31 shooting) was reached in a mid-season loss to Xavier. By contrast, Spears shot sparingly from three point range, averaging less than one three pointer per game. He led the team in both assists and turnovers.

The only player to start every game for the season, Spears played 1,191 out of a possible 1,290 minutes, leading to criticism that Ewing had played him too much and led to Spears tiring late in games.

Despite being ranked fifth in the Big East for scoring, Spears was not selected for any post-season conference awards. In the week following the end of the 2022-23 season, Spears announced he would seek the NBA draft but would otherwise pursue the transfer portal en rotue to Florida State, ending a brief stop that gained neither on-court success nor a Georgetown degree.
