Anthony Allen (1986-1990)
The 1986 "Mr. Basketball" winner in the state of Texas and the #22 recruit nationwide for the class of 1986, Anthony Allen committed to Georgetown with high hopes, ones that were sidelined by a run of injuries. It did not hold Allen back from a productive effort at Georgetown and a rewarding career to follow.
"[He] is a 6-foot-7-inch freshman from Port Arthur, Tex., a high-school all-American who knew what he was doing when he chose Georgetown. Unless he became a Patrick Ewing or a Reggie Williams, he was going to be part of the swarm," wrote the New York Times.
Allen's first game was a memorable one, with 15 points in 15 minutes in the 1986-87 season opener, and 15 starts over this first two years. But a run of ankle and knee injuries, some dating back to high school, limited his on-court time but not his dedication.
He returned to the starting lineup in his senior season, starting 14 games down the stretch alongside Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo. Allen scored sparingly (49 points over 26 games) but was a consistent defensive presence and a valuable leader to the team. Over his career, Allen started at four different positions.
Anthony was a smart player, you know," said former coach John Thompson to The HOYA. "He was competitive, and he was the kind of guy that was a very good defensive player, and a lot of the things we tried to do predicated on a person being a team player as well as a person who could rebound and defend. Anthony could do those things, and that was very important."
Allen played professionally in France and Australia after graduation, and later worked as a campus police officer at Georgetown while completing graduate studies to become a minister. He later served as an assistant pastor at a church in Prince Georges County, MD.
