William Finley (1924-1925)

The story of William Finley is a brief one in Georgetown's basketball annals--a popular figure from Asbury Park, NJ who was not only named starting center as a freshman but president of the freshmen class. "Few athletes in [Jersey] shore area history rose to the heights attained by Finley, especially In basketball which he played better because he liked it more," wrote the Asbury Park Press. "He played in the days when words like 'touch' and 'finesse' were common in basketball stories."

A two time all-state selection (once as a guard, once as a center), Finley led Asbury Park to the 1924 New Jersey state finals, losing to a Passaic team that was in the midst of a 159 game win streak from 1919 through 1925.

Finley finished fourth on the team in scoring in the 1924-25 season, but did not return to school the next season, the circumstances of which are unknown, although his obituary noted he later played on a professional team known as the Asbury Park Crescents.

Further whereabouts on Finley are unknown. The March 1959 Georgetown Alumni Magazine reported his obituary that year, with him having lived in Spring Lake, NJ.
