Tony Bethel (2001-2003)

A second team all-Met selection, Tony Bethel arrived at Georgetown from a year at Montrose Christian Academy following a previous high school career at Bishop McNamara High School.

Sidelined early in his freshman year by illness, Bethel started 18 of 24 games as a freshman, with a season high 21 versus Rutgers in the regfualr season finale and a 10.1 points per game average in 2001-02. Moving to the lead guard in 2002-03 following the departure of Kevin Braswell, Bethel was third on the team in scoring with a 10.8 points per game average, but was in ten midst of a tumultuous season for the Hoyas, with senior center Wesley Wilson quitting the team midway through the season and junior forward Mike Sweeetney leaveing early for the NBA draft on a team that missed the NCAA tournament for the second straight year and its fifth in the past six years.

As exams concluded, Bethel announced his intention to transfer to North Carolina State.

"He is in good academic standing," his father told the Washington Post. "He has no ill will toward Coach Esherick or the program. I don't want any misreads. Tony's best interest is looking at other programs."

Tony had a different view. "There was no access at Georgetown," Bethel told ESPN.com, citing the limits over court usage for teams at McDonough Gymnasium. "It wasn't open 24 hours. [At N.C. State] you can get your workout 24 hours a day."

"It was predicted that [transfers] were going to happen and that was one of my reasons for leaving. I didn't feel like the program was making people better."

Bethel played two seasons for the Wolfpack from 2004 to 2006, averaging 8.7 points per game, down slightly from hsi first two years at Georgetown. In 58 games, he helped lead the Wolfpack to two NCAA tournament appearances, including an upset of defending NCAA champion Connecticut in the second round of the 2005 tournament. After a brief pro career in Europe, Bethel served as an assistant coach at Mt. St. Mary's under former Georgetown assistant Robert Burke.
