• THE GEORGETOWN BASKETBALL HISTORY PROJECT

Pascal Fleury (1990-1992)

He was the textbook definition of a basketball "project": one who had not played basketball until the age of 14 and by his senior year in high school, possessed only basic skills in the game. Nonetheless, at 7-2, the tallest player in Canada had potential, and the chance to learn under the likes of future Hall of Famers Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo offered an opportunity. After all, it was only two years earlier that John Thompson had taken a project in Ben Gillery and got him into the NBA.

Such was not the case with Pascal Fleury, whose two years at Georgetown were spent on the bench.

As a freshman, Fleury appeared in only 15 games. During those games, he attempted only two shots, each at close range, and missed both of them. He became the first scholarship player since Aaron Long in 1973 to have gone an entire season without scoring.

Fleury's sophomore year proved little better. Appearing in 11 games, his only points came in walkover wins versus St. Leo and Maryland-Eastern Shore, and saw action in just eight minutes of the Big East portion of the schedule, failing to take a single shot.

With the recruitment of 6-9 Othella Harrington and 6-10 Duane Spencer in the spring of 1992, Fleury's on-court time was even less likely in the future. Coach John Thompson made a call to nearby Maryland-Baltimore County, which welcomed Fleury as a transfer. Over two seasons at UMBC, Fleury averaged 7.2 points and 6.7 rebounds over a total of 52 games.

Following college, Fleury toured with the Harlem Globetrotters as "Frenchy" Fleury and played 11 years in the Canadian pro leagues.
