A three sport athlete at the Hilltop, Paul Byrne was a reserve guard for three seasons, and was often credited for his fine work as a defender.

Byrne did not return to the varsity in 1924, and his whereabouts thereafter are unknown. His only reference as a senior came in The HOYA, which noted that he played in the interhall (intramural) basketball ranks.
