Maurice McCarthy (1927-1930)

A three year starter, Maurice McCarthy finished in the top three in scoring all three seasons and was elected captain for the 1929-30 season. A pair of 14 point games his senior season were career highs.

But the name of Maurice McCarthy is best known in the sport of golf. The son of a notable golf course designer of the early 20th Century, McCarthy was not only one of Georgetown's greatest golfers, but among of the nation's leading amateur players of his era. McCarthy won the 1928 Intercollegiate Title, a predecessor tournament to the NCAA golf championship. He finished behind Bobby Jones in the 1930 U.S. Amateur Championship at the Merion Golf Club and played on the 1932 Walker Cup team.

McCarthy, an amateur golfer in the years before widespread professional competition, was a vice president of the Anaconda Wire and Cable Company when he died in 1957 from complications following surgery.
