Jack McGrath (1921-1922)

As a sophomore from Winthrop, MA, Jack McGrath served as a backup to Paul Florence at forward in the 1921-22, season, appearing in seven games. McGrath did nor return to the team the following year.

Although Georgetown records do not list him with a degree, McGrath's lengthy 1972 obituary in the New York Times notes him as a graduate. McGrath enjoyed a successful career after Georgetown, following his father in the stevedore business, better known today as a dock worker or longshoreman. In 1939, he became chairman of the John W. McGrath Corporation, one of the nation's largest such firms.

"It is unfair," he told a Congressional committee in 1951, "that the general public should be allowed to think that stevedores are participants in the organized crime that plagues the waterfront, that they are anything save normal, everyday business men who lead respectable lives."

A board member of many civic groups, he also served as an official of the Winged Foot Golf Course in Mamaroneck, NY.
