Harry kelly (1912-1916)

A three sport letterman, Harry (King) Kelly started for three seasons on the varsity basketball season, earning the title of captain in his junior season and President of the Athletic Association in 1916, emblematic of the leadership of the entire College student body. He led the team in 1915-16 with a 10.2 points per game average.

"King" Kelly came to Georgetown four years ago with the reputation of being one of the best athletes ever developed in Buffalo and ever since his name has been synonymous with Georgetown athletics," wrote the 1916 Ye Domesday Booke. "For four years he has starred on the gridiron, on the basketball court and on the diamond, and in his Senior year received the greatest honor that Georgetown can give, the Presidency of the Athletic Association. It is very seldom that any college can boast of a more versatile athlete than Harry, and Georgetown and the Class of 1916 feel deeply honored in him."

"He is a Senior in the Academic Department of the University," it continued, "and although his main interest has always been in athletics, he has always been among the leaders of his class and one of Georgetown's premier debaters. As President of the Athletic Association he displayed exceptional executive ability, and guided the fortunes of the Association through one of the most successful years in its history."

Following Georgetown, Kelly earned a law degree at the SUNY University at Buffalo and served as an attorney for over 40 years in the Buffalo, NY area. In 1962 he was honored by New York state Supreme Court Justice Emil L. Cohen, who saluted Kelly as "an active attorney, a staunch advocate, an officer of the court and a lawyer who exemplifies the highest traditions of the court."

Harry Kelly died in 1964.
