Herman Heide (1931-1933)

A two year reserve forward, Herman Heide saw action in 13 games over two seasons.

The grandson of a prominent Catholic layman in New York, Heide was a man of deep faith while at Georgetown, serving for four years on the Sodality and as president of the St. John Berchman's Society. Following his ordination in 1941, he volunteered to serve in World War II, receiving the Silver Star for gallantry in 1945 and briefly serving as a prisoner of war in Germany.

Following the war, Heide returned to New York and served as a parish priest for 42 years and as moderator of the Newman clubs at Hunter and Lehman Colleges. He retired in 1991 to Archbishop Stepinac HS and died in 1997 at the age of 83.

Two decades after his death, Msgr. Heide was added to a list of priests either accused or convicted of sexual abuse by the Archdiocese of New York, following an accusation received in 2019 from a former altar boy who attended St. Joseph's Church in Yorkville in 1967. As noted in a statement, "the Archdiocese judged that, while not concluding that he was guilty of abuse, and acknowledging that because of his death in 1997 he could not defend himself, compensation should nonetheless be made..." No further accusers have since come forward.
