Ed McNamara (1968-1971)

Few players have dealt with the frequency and severity of injuries that limited a basketball career as did Ed McNamara, a forward on the Georgetown teams from 1968 through 1971.

A 22 point per game scorer at Bergen Catholic HS, McNamara was one of the top scorers for the 1967-68 freshmen and was an early contender for a starting job as a sophomore. After the season, however, he was diagnosed with a heart ailment and underwent four different surgeries to address the issue. He was able to return in the fall of 1968, averaging 5.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.

For his junior season, McNamara was again projected as a starter, but tore ligaments in his knee in a pre-season practice. Following recovery, McNamara lasted just four games before a second knee injury, sidelining him for the season. By 1970, McNamara returned to the team as a reserve, averaging 6.0 points and 5.3 rebounds. A 20 point effort in the regular season home finale was a career high, a look at what might have been for his career.

Following his days on the court, McNamara served one season as an assistant coach for the Hoyas in 1971-72 and later served as an assistant coach during Catholic University's brief tenure in Division I basketball under Jack Kvancz.
