Bill Hollander (1911-1913)

A two sport athlete in basketball and baseball, Bill (Dutch) Hollander was a backup forward during the 1912 South Atlantic championship team as well as the 1912-13 team that finished 11-5.

"Apart from taking an active part in athletics, "Dutch" has always shown his desire to acquire a knowledge of the law, and he is as much at home framing a plea, for practice court, or tracing a real estate title, as he is on the athletic field," wrote the 1914 Ye Domesday Booke. "We feel certain of his ultimate success in the practice of his profession."

Hollander's story was not forgotten in his hometown of York, PA, recalling him upon his untimely death in 1947. The obituary in the Feb. 24, 1947 York Gazette and Daily ran the length of the page. In part, it reads:

"William H. Hollander, prominent California attorney, was found dead Saturday afternoon slumped over the wheel, of his automobile in downtown San Francisco. According to word received here by York relatives Mr.-Hollander succumbed to a heart attack while going to watch one of his sons participate in an athletic event. He was 52.

"Mr. Hollander was a well-known athlete and remained identified with sports until his death. While at York High he excelled in football, baseball, basketball and track. He later attended Blair Academy in New Jersey, Georgetown University, from where he took his law degree, and John B. Stetson School in Florida. At each place he distinguished himself athletically and played several seasons of professional baseball. His professional career included action with Toronto and Buffalo and reached a peak when he performed for the St. Louis Browns of the American League. After moving to the west coast Mr. Hollander continued his interest in sports and began coaching at the University of California. He turned to football officiating and worked in several outstanding Pacific coast contests including some in the famed Rose Bowl at Pasadena...

"Mr. Hollander became active in California politics as a Democrat and ran unsuccessfully for California's state legislature in 1942. His last trip east was made two years ago as a California delegate to the fourth inauguration of Franklin D. Roosevelt."
