A member of Georgetown's undefeated 1938 football team, Bill Burke played a reserve role on the 1937-38 basketball team, playing in one game.

A 1997 obituary in the Chicago Tribune noted an extensive career for Burke following his college days.

"William L. Burke, 80, the former chairman of Great Lakes Coal Co. in Terre Haute, Ind., had many careers over the years, including as a Navy pilot, a lawyer and general counsel for the United Mine Workers International Union, and the owner of coal mines and a quarry in southern Indiana," it wrote. "Mr. Burke, a 1939 graduate of Georgetown University and of its law school in 1946, served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a special aide to the superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis and was named a special judge advocate by the Secretary of the Navy in 1946."
