Al Matuza (1938-1941)

One of Georgetown's all-time football greats, Al Matuza also played basketball, which he did as a reserve forward for three seasons.

The 6-2 Matuza was an undersized forward when he played at Shenandoah (PA) HS, and following a fifth year at Staunton Military Academy, joined the football and basketball teams in the 1938 season. As a sophomore, Matuza played in six of the tam's first seven games before being sidelined with an injury. In today's climate, the football coach might put a halt to such a risk, but in the 1930's, it was still fine to play both sports. Matuza saw action in 13 games as a junior but just two as a senior, perhaps as a result of growing NFL interest in the Georgetown lineman.

If Matuza's basketball career was not altogether memorable, his football career at the Hilltop certainly was. A thee year starter on the offensive and defensive lines, Matuza was part of a golden era for Georgetown Football, with a combined three year record of 23-2-1 and an appearance in the 1941 Orange Bowl. The only teams to defeat Georgetown in Matuza's entire college career were Boston College and Mississippi State, by a combined eight points.

In 1941, Matuza was an eighth round NFL draft pick of the Chicago Bears, playing three seasons and earning a Pro Bowl berth in 1941. During his three pro seasons, the Bears won 28 of 32 games, including NFL championships in 1941 and 1943. (Matuza is the only Georgetown player to have ever won a NFL title and make the Pro Bowl team, then known as the "NFL All-Star Game".) Following the 1943 title, Matuza left the NFL to join the U.S. Navy in World War II.

Following World War II, Matuza settled outside Philadelphia to become a high school teacher, with positions in the Pennsbury and Morrisville school districts in Pennsylvania until his retirement in 1980.
